DBCTX is hosting our annual weekend for ALL DeafBlind ages 14 and up and their families. Learn communication skills and Co-presence with your child from parents and DeafBlind Leaders who have been where you are.

Campers...

Youth 14 - 22 years of age AND still in high school or post-secondary school
Adults (18+ years of age)

DeafBlind
Able to make independent decisions

...and their families:

2 Parents or Guardians included in cost of registration. Inquire for rates for additional attendees, including siblings!

Volunteers

Co-Navigators and SSPs with experience or interest working with teens and young adults. There is NO training associated with this event. Volunteers are asked to come with basic working knowledge.

The fine print:

Participants, volunteers, and staff must follow all host camp rules as well as the following DBCTX policies. Anyone found in violation of these policies may be subject to review and possible dismissal pending investigation.

COMMUNICATION POLICY

DBCTX respects the communication preferences of all persons who attend camp. Attendants have some degree of hearing and vision loss, so communication modes may include spoken language, sign language, use of assistive devices, or a combination.

CODE OF CONDUCT POLICY

DBCTX has a zero tolerance policy for alcohol and illegal drugs. Individuals attending or volunteering at DBCTX must not bring alcohol or illegal drugs into camp, come onto the camp grounds while intoxicated, or smoke in non-designated smoking areas.

HARASSMENT POLICY

DeafBlind Community of Texas is providing this event as an opportunity for safe, respectful learning and will not permit harassment, discrimination or horizontal violence based on another's comments, questions, schema, race, color, religion, hearing status, gender, gender expression, age, national origin, disability, marital status, sexual orientation or any other protected class.

CANCELLATION POLICY

If a staff member, volunteer, or participant must cancel for any reason, please submit this request in writing to info@dbctx.org or your direct supervisor as soon as possible. Refunds for participants must be made in writing 40 day before event start date and will be reviewed by board for a determination. Staff and volunteer positions are non-refundable.

Clan Armadillo at Texas Renaissance Festival 2026 (November 20, 2026)

DBCTX is again partnering with ASL Faires TX and Clan Eyeth to once again present Deaf and DeafBlind Weekend during the Highland Fling!

WHEN: November 20-22. Campground opens at 12pm, but we will be setting up until about 4pm.

FESTIVAL PARKING: Handicap Parking available for free in first 2 rows with an accessible plate or placard. General parking is free. Paid options for preferred or valet are available.

Guests will need to purchase a FESTIVAL TICKET for each day you are attending and a CAMPING PASS for the weekend if you would like to camp. Prices will be announced soon along with a discount code.

It's the Highland Fling!

All weekend long, ASL Faires TX will provide ASL Interpreters at select shows, and DBCTX will provide Co-Navigators for select periods of the day. During lunch on Saturday, there will be a scheduled gathering at the Greek Agora for all participants - it's a DEAF INVASION!! Then on Saturday evening, we'll gather for the PUB SING and FIRE SHOW!!

Overnight guests will be able to attend AFTER DARK EVENTS, such as the music and dancing... and more!

Join Clan Armadillo for a weekend filled with costumes and festivities!

Come for a day, come for a night, or come for the weekend!

CAMPING:

Rugged camping will be available with Clan Armadillo and our Deaf partner group, Clan Eyeth. Bring warm clothes and lots of blankets for the chilly nights. BYO Tent, sleeping bag, and any other necessities. Current weather indicates it might be a wet season!

Food options will be available through pre-orders with Clan Eyeth. Details will be announced soon.

Volunteers are eligible for daily parking passes. Volunteers working at least 2 days will be eligible for a free camping pass and will receive companion/return passes, which can be used for any +1s or a return visit for Celtic Christmas, Nov 28-30th.

2027 ProTactile Weekend Retreat (April 16, 2027)

Protactile Weekend retreat

OPEN CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS

Cost: $400 Per Person

Date: April 16 - 18, 2027

Location: San Antonio, TX (details shared upon registration)

Protactile Retreats are touch-based educational programs that teach participants how to communicate using Protactile (PT), a language and culture rooted in physical contact led by Protactile community.

What You Learn in a Protactile Retreat

Core Principles: Learn the philosophy, history, and other foundational principles of Protactile language.
Hand Placement & Roles: Practice proper hand usage, distinguishing between the distinct functions of sending and receiving messages.
Tactile Strategies: Explore techniques like tracking, mapping, information sourcing, and Prompt Adopt Touch (PAT).
Co-Presence & Co-Navigation: Understand how to maintain physical connection, reciprocity, and shared space to work with individuals who request those services.

Who Takes These Workshops?

American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters seeking professional development
ITP Students
CoNavigators (CNs) and Interveners
Educators, rehabilitation professionals, and family members
DeafBlind individuals (18+)

What to bring:

In addition to a weekender of clothes and toiletries, we recommend you bring a swimsuit and towel for possible underwater PT time, which will discourage dependence on visual information.

Disclosures:

Cancellation without refund permitted at least 24 hours prior to the event by request. Full refunds can only be offered with cancelations of one week or more prior to event. Please email Jacqueline@dbctx.org to facilitate a cancellation. This workshop is presented in a mix of PTL, ASL, and English. Communication is adjusted based on participant's needs.

There will be REQUIRED training associated with this event. Volunteers will be contacted upon acceptance with next steps.

Never attended our training before? You will be required to attend our CN 101 Training on Saturday July 31st and Sunday August 1st. This training will provide 1.2 CEUs (BEI Ethics).

All volunteers are eligible for the CN Practicum during the camp. Must be present all week, follow all expected schedule requirements, and meet with DBCTX Training staff for feedback sessions. This training will provide 4.2 CEUs (BEI Ethics).

RID CEUs for these trainings are pending for Power, Privilege, and Oppression related topics. TSID is an Approved RID CMP Sponsor for Continuing Education Activities. This Professional Studies program is offered for 1.2 & 4.2 CEUs respectively at the Some Content Knowledge Level.
