Protactile Weekend retreat

OPEN CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS 

Cost: $600 Per Person 

Date: October 9th - 11th

Location: San Antonio, TX (details shared upon registration)

Protactile Retreats are touch-based educational programs that teach participants how to communicate using Protactile (PT), a language and culture rooted in physical contact led by Protactile community.

What You Learn in a Protactile Retreat

• Core Principles: Learn the philosophy, history, and other foundational principles of Protactile language. 
• Hand Placement & Roles: Practice proper hand usage, distinguishing between the distinct functions of sending and receiving messages. 
• Tactile Strategies: Explore techniques like tracking, mapping, information sourcing, and Prompt Adopt Touch (PAT). 
• Co-Presence & Co-Navigation: Understand how to maintain physical connection, reciprocity, and shared space to work with individuals who request those services.

Who Takes These Workshops?

• American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters seeking professional development
• ITP Students
• CoNavigators (CNs) and Interveners
• Educators, rehabilitation professionals, and family members 
• DeafBlind individuals (18+)

What to bring:

In addition to a weekender of clothes and toiletries, we recommend you bring a swimsuit and towel for possible underwater PT time, which will discourage dependence on visual information. 

CEUs:

DBCTX is working to offer 2.4 CEUs  (pending) for certified interpreters who participate.

Cancellation without refund permitted at least 24 hours prior to the event by request. Full refunds can only be offered with cancelations of one week or more prior to event. Please email Jacqueline@dbctx.org to facilitate a cancellation. This workshop is presented in a mix of PTL, ASL, and English. Communication is adjusted based on participant's needs.
