    DeafBlind Community of Texas Presents:

    Immersion into a deafblind life

Experience a simulation environment to step into the shoes of a DeafBlind individual.

    OPEN CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS

Cost: $600 Per Person - 2.4* CEUs BEI Ethics Pending

    (Payment Options Available)

    Date: Dec 5th to 7th

    Location: Houston

    DeafBlind-led Activities:

    • Grocery Shopping & Cooking

Engage with a Co-navigator to explore the local supermarket with a list of items determined by the group. Then, work together in a fully-stocked kitchen to prep, cook, and serve a meal.

    • Restaurant Ordering

Venture to a local restaurant and, with the support of a CN, order, eat, and pay for your meal with the group.

    • Social Events

Attend a DeafBlind social event while under simulation. Challenge yourself to communicate with other guests and attendees.

    • Mobility Navigation

Learn orientation and mobility techniques. Gain experience with co-navigators, mapping, and the classic white cane.

    Goals:

Improve your understanding of working with DeafBlind individuals. Simulate different levels of sight and hearing while learning how to navigate in typical environments with support.

    What to bring:

In addition to a weekender of clothes and toiletries, we recommend you bring a swimsuit and towel for possible underwater PT time, which will discourage a dependence on visual information. If you have them, wearing noise-cancelling over-ear headphones as well as earplugs will better simulate a Deaf experience.

    CEUs:

DBCTX is offering 2.4 CEUs (BEI Ethics, pending) for certified interpreters who participate.

    QUESTIONS:

    Email Tresa@dbctx.org

    Disclosures:

This workshop is presented for entry-level participants and above. As a part of this community conversation, we will discuss the effect of power, privilege, and oppression within the DeafBlind community and the effect of Distantism from support providers. Participants are encouraged to take breaks and request support as needed.

Cancellation without refund permitted at least 24 hours prior to the event by request. Full refunds can only be offered with cancelations of one week or more prior to event. Please email Tresa@dbctx.org to facilitate a cancellation. This workshop is presented in a mix of PTL, ASL, and English in a simulated environment. Communication is adjusted based on participant's needs.

DeafBlind Community of Texas is providing this workshop as an opportunity for safe, respectful learning and will not permit harassment, discrimination or horizontal violence based on another's comments, questions, schema, race, color, religion, hearing status, gender, gender expression, age, national origin, disability, marital status, sexual orientation or any other protected class.

    Communication Policy:

DBCTX respects the communication preferences of all persons who attend events. Communication modes may include spoken language, sign language, tactile language, use of assistive devices, or a combination. Discrimination or harassment on the basis of language use is not permitted and will not be tolerated.
